What is network?

A network, in computing, is a group of two or more devices that can communicate. In practice, a network is comprised of a number of different computer systems connected by physical and/or wireless connections.

Which are types of network?

LAN stands for local area network. It covers, as the name suggests, a local area. This usually includes a local office and they're also pretty common in homes now, thanks to the spread of Wi-Fi.

WAN, in contrast to a LAN, refers to a wide area network. The name is exactly what it sounds like: a network that covers an area wider than a LAN. Beyond that, the definition is less clear.

A metropolitan area network (MAN) (not to be confused with "manpages" in the Unix and Linux world) connects nodes located in the same metro area. For example, a company located in the San Francisco Bay Area might have its buildings in San Francisco, Oakland and San Jose linked together via a network.

The Web, as it's commonly known, is often confused with the internet. Although the two are intricately connected, they are different things.
